Brief Scores: IND 518/5 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 175, Shubman Gill 129* Jomel Warrican 3/98) lead West Indies 140/4 (Alick Athanaze 41, Tagenarine Chanderpaul 34, Ravindra Jadeja 3/37) by 378 runs at stumps on Day 2.

India continued their dominance in the Test series as their batters led by a brilliant unbeaten ton from Shubman Gill raced past the 500-run mark in the first innings. Jadeja further helped India ride on the home advantage by picking three of the four West Indies wickets to fall.

Talking Point: Nitish Reddy’s promotion to No. 5
At the fall of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket, India sprung a surprise by sending Nitish Reddy at No.5, promoting him above both Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja. This should be seen as a clear sign of confidence shown by the team management on Nitish’s batting ability. He has done decently well in his brief international career, as well as in the IPL.

Being picked as a fast bowling all-rounder in home conditions, we may not see him bowl as much as the others but he still has a role to play in the middle-order. This will be a morale booster for both Nitish and the team in the long run as they need someone of his batting ability to come and contribute when India travel overseas.

lndia continue rich vein of form, reach 427/4
Coming into day 2, India were in a strong position at 318/2 with skipper Shubman Gill batting along with the centurion from the opening day, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jaiswal was expected to pile on the runs on what is a belter of a batting surface but a running mishap cost him his wicket early on the piece. Nitish Reddy, who didn’t bat in the first Test was promoted up the order and along with Gill, he added some quick runs.

Skipper Gill, who was watchful last evening, came with an attacking mindset as he reached his half-century in just 95 balls, having started the day on 20 off 68.

Nitish, looking good to make a sizable contribution lost his wicket against the run of play when on 43. India, with an aggressive approach, added 109 runs for the loss of two wickets in the session, and Gill batting on 75.

India extend their dominance, scalp one wicket after declaring at 518
The post lunch session saw India pressing the accelerator as they added a further 90 runs, and batting out just 18 overs. This phase saw Gill reaching his fifth century in his last six Tests. Giving him company was Dhruv Jurel, who registered a fine century in the last game. The pair added 102 runs for the fifth wicket and the fall of Jurel’s wicket saw India declare their innings at 518.

West Indies, chasing a tall total, got off to a decent start with both John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul playing some confident shots. This was short lived as Campbell was caught by Sudarshan at short leg in a rather freakish manner. Before tea, West Indies added 26 for the loss of Campbell’s wicket.

West Indies slip in final session, after promising start
For the first time in the series, WI batters were at ease tackling India’s spin trio. The pair of Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze were pretty confident in handling the in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav as they belted him for a couple of boundaries. Enroute, they reached their 50-run stand, the first for a West Indies pair in this series.

After a couple of close calls, just at the stroke of drinks break, Ravindra Jadeja broke the 66-run stand. The left-arm spinner was once again at the pick of things as he scalped the West Indies skipper for a duck, just a over after Kuldeep removed a well-set Athanaze for 41. The pair of Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach batted assuredly at the end to take them unscathed.

In the final session, the visitors added 124 runs, but lost three wickets in the process.

What’s Next
It will be an uphill task for West Indies on Day 3 in their pursuit of a tall total. They would need to bat extremely well to avoid a follow-on let alone going close to India’s tally.

India, on the other hand, would aim to wrap up the innings as quickly as possible on the moving day.
