Brief scores: WI 162 (Justin Greaves 32, Mohammed Siraj 4/40) trail IND 448/5 (Dhruv Jurel 125, Roston Chase 2/90) by 286 runs at stumps on Day 2.

India stamped their authority on Day 2 in Ahmedabad with a commanding batting display. Centuries from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Shubman Gill’s fluent fifty, powered the hosts into a massive lead. The deficit was wiped out inside the first hour and from there, the West Indies struggled with wayward bowling and a puzzling new-ball strategy. By stumps, India had clearly taken the upper hand, leaving West Indies with a mountain to climb to get back into the game.

Talking Point: India’s top order needs greater application
India’s top order must show more application and resilience in home conditions. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill got starts but failed to build on them, and for Gill, especially converting 50s into 100s is crucial to grow in confidence. Unlike overseas pitches, Indian tracks demand focus on every ball due to turn and variable bounce. Against weaker teams like West Indies, it’s important to cash in and make big scores, a lesson the top order needs to learn quickly.

KL Rahul slams ton, India 218/3 in 67 overs at lunch
KL Rahul lit up the morning session on Day 2 with a brilliant century, his 11th in Tests and first at home in nearly nine years, guiding India to 218/3 at lunch in Ahmedabad. Resuming with intent, Rahul cashed in after a reprieve on 57 in the very first over of the day, and now remains unbeaten alongside Dhruv Jurel. Earlier, skipper Shubman Gill added a fluent half-century before falling to Roston Chase soon after. India piled on 97 runs in 29 overs to stretch their lead to 56 runs over West Indies’ 162, firmly in control.

India’s lead stretches to 164 at tea as Jurel, Jadeja notch fifties
India tightened their grip in the second session, reaching 326/4 with a commanding 164-run lead at tea. The only setback came in the first over after lunch when KL Rahul (100) fell to a simple catch at cover soon after completing his century. From there, Dhruv Jurel (68*) and Ravindra Jadeja (50*) took charge, stitching together a terrific partnership worth 108 runs in the session. Jurel, deputizing for Rishabh Pant, impressed with a fluent half-century, while Jadeja counterattacked the spinners on a crumbling surface where the ball was keeping low and occasionally kicking up. With both batters well set and India crossing the 300 mark, the hosts are firmly in a stronghold, leaving the West Indies searching for answers.

Jurel, Jadeja’s centuries take hosts past 250-run lead, India 448/5 at stumps
Ravindra Jadeja continued his sublime form, notching up a classy century as India closed Day 2 at 448/5, leading West Indies by 286 runs. The all-rounder stitched together a brilliant stand with Dhruv Jurel, who also brought up his maiden Test hundred before falling for 125 to Khary Pierre. With Jadeja still unbeaten alongside Washington Sundar, India ended the day in complete command on a surface showing signs of turn and uneven bounce, leaving West Indies searching for answers.

What to expect on Day 3 of IND vs WI, First Test?
India will look to stretch their lead with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar at the crease. A solid partnership could take the game completely away from West Indies on a pitch showing variable bounce and turn. The hosts will aim to build a commanding total before unleashing their spinners, while the visitors desperately need early wickets to stay in the contest. With some inclement weather forecast later in the Test, the big question now is when India choose to declare most likely batting through the morning session before giving their bowlers ample time to force a result.
