England vs India 2025, 1st Test Day 2, Highlights: Jasprit Bumrah’s 3-48 keeps India in fight as England reach 209/3.

Brief Scores: England 209/3 (Ollie Pope 100*, Ben Duckett 62, Jasprit Bumrah 3/48) trail India 471 (Shubman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134, Ben Stokes 4/66) by 262 runs at stumps on Day 2.
Thanks to the twin centuries from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill, Team India came into the second day of the opening Leeds Test in a strong position. They aimed to put over 500 runs on the board in the first innings. Meanwhile, England expected to decrease the run rate and pick a few crucial wickets.
Rain was expected to arrive in Headingley by the second session. That would put more moisture on the surface but erase the chance of the surface drying under the scorching heat.
The pitch looked drier. With the sun out, the grass from the opening day vanished making it easier for batting. But the requirement was to be careful against the new ball.
Let’s take a look at how the three sessions panned out on Day 2 of the first Test in the ENG vs IND 2025 series:
England bounce back after Rishabh Pant’s century
The overnight batters, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, started with aggression on the second day. On most occasions, the wicket-keeper batter started the over with his funky big shot before taking his time. He celebrated his sixth red-ball century with a huge six against Shoaib Bashir.
But the momentum broke with the fall of Shubman Gill (147) to end the 219-run stand for the fourth wicket. Karun Nair’s Test comeback didn’t go as he would have imagined. He drove Stokes outside his body for a four-ball duck. Pant (134) misjudged the swing under the overhead conditions.
Meanwhile, just like yesterday, the England captain picked up a wicket on the stroke of lunch. India went to the break with 454/7, losing the last three wickets for seven runs.
India collapse for 471
The visitors’ batting didn’t last long after the break. Jasprit Bumrah got an outside edge into the hands of the slip fielder. Ravindra Jadeja, after a few aggressive shots, chopped onto the stumps. They lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs to finish with 471 in the first inning.

Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope shoulder England to 107/1; hosts trail by 364 runs
Everyone was excited to see Jasprit Bumrah back in action with the red ball. The excitement increased when the premier pacer drew first blood. On the last ball of his opening over, he sent back Zak Crawley, who turned into the leg-side to get an outside edge.
But since then, Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett settled the home side with an unbeaten 107-run stand for the second wicket. The latter celebrated his 14th Test century. Under semi-blue skies, the visitors failed to make an impact later on.
Ollie Pope’s 100* settle England at 209/3; reduce trail to 262 runs
India’s fielding was not up to the mark. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jadeja dropped two catches of Bumrah. But the Ahmedabad-born broke the 122-run stand as Duckett (62) got his inside edge onto the stumps. Joe Root survived the early 15 mins and didn’t look under any pressure since then.
Ollie Pope, thanks to his busy batting, celebrated his ninth Test century in just 125 deliveries. But late in the evening, Bumrah brought the visitors back in the game with Root’s wicket. Harry Brook got saved thanks to the Gujarat pacer’s no-ball as England finished the day with 209/3. They still remained 262 runs short of India’s first inning total.
What to expect on Day 3
Undoubtedly, England aim to cross India’s first-inning score and take a lead. The surface is expected to get better as the game will pressure. That will make it easier for the chasing side in the fourth innings. All of these make the first-inning lead very important.

How many other players can have you on the edge of your seat the way Rishabh does?

India end second day on a somewhat encouraging note with Root’s wicket. Incomparable Bumrah apart, bowling’s looked innocuous on a flat pitch. England have fought back extremely well, first with ball, then bat
