Brief scores: IND 587 (Shubman Gill 269, Shoaib Bashir 3/167) lead ENG 77/3 (Harry Brook 30, Akash Deep 2/36) by 510 runs at stumps on Day 2.

India bossed Day 2 at Edgbaston as Shubman Gill lit up the stage with a brilliant 269, powering the visitors to a massive 587. Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) provided solid support in the middle. England’s top order crumbled to 25/3, with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj striking early. Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the ship, but at 77/3, India are well on top.

Gill-Jadeja forge 203-run stand, India 419/6 at lunch
India continued their dominance on the second morning at Edgbaston, cruising past 400 runs. A brilliant 203-run partnership between Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket laid the foundation.

Gill played with elegance and authority, bringing up his maiden Test 150. Jadeja added a gritty 89 before gloving a leg-side catch off Josh Tongue, England’s only breakthrough of the session.

Despite Jadeja’s dismissal, Gill remained solid at the crease, dealing in boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking. He was joined by Washington Sundar as India, six wickets down, aimed to build another strong partnership.

For the second session in a row, England managed just one wicket—Joe Root dismissing Washington Sundar for 42.

ENG vs IND 2025, Edgbaston Test: Akash Deep took 2-36 on Day 2 vs England

India all out for 587, Akash Deep’s twin strikes send shockwaves to England
India fell just 13 runs short of the 600-run mark, finishing their first innings on 587. Shubman Gill was in sublime touch, scoring a magnificent 269 off 387 balls before Josh Tongue dismissed him shortly after tea. Gill looked set to take India past 600, but exhaustion caught up with him. Unlike the first Test, India’s lower middle order showed better character and supported Gill well as he dismantled the England bowling attack.

India’s pacer Akash Deep rocked England early with a fiery opening spell, removing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks and putting the hosts on the back foot. Mohammed Siraj added to the pressure with another crucial wicket, leaving England three down. Joe Root and Harry Brook were leading the recovery for the home side.

What to expect on Day 5
On Day 3, India will aim to tighten the screws and push for a massive first-innings lead. They will look to strike early and bowling England out well below the follow-on mark. With the pitch showing some variable bounce, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj will aim to exploit any cracks in England’s middle order. Joe Root and Harry Brook hold the key for England, who must build a strong partnership to stay in the game.
